Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy beat competition from two others to emerge the best goalkeeper for Europe in the 2020/21 season

In his first season playing in the European Champions League after swapping Rennes for Chelsea last summer, the shot-stopper nailed down a permanent role in the sticks for Chelsea and that included in the Champions League where he played all the matches.

The Senegalese manned the post in all 12 of Chelsea’s Champions League matches keeping nine clean sheets in all including the Final at Porto against domestic rivals Manchester City. He thus becomes the first African goalkeeper to lay hands on the prize earlier in the season becoming the first to win the completion in the Champions League era. And only second to win the competition overall following Zimbabwe’s Bruce Grobbelaar winning the European Cup in 1984 with Liverpool.

Mendy will be hoping to keep the stakes high again this season as his side prepares to defend their trophy. He has already kept two clean sheets in the Premier League’s opening two matches. Impressively he has also added the European Super Cup to his trophy cabinet since moving to Chelsea.
