There has been an uproar in some parts of the country after the release of names of nominees for the positions of MMDCEs.

On Sunday, September 19, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Dan Botwe announced nominees for the positions of MMDCEs after a long wait and pressure from the opposition NDC and some Civil Society Organizations.

Even though one would expect that the announcement would have brought some relief considering the long waiting days, some parts of the country were thrown into a tantrum. In the Odododiodio District, a group of persons blocked a road at Jamestown by burning car tyres, a move which the police describe as causing fear and panic. The police have subsequently arrested four persons in connection to this act.

Similar and more violent acts have been witnessed in the Chereponi district where some youth believed to be members of the New Patriotic Party were seen in a video making rounds on social media attacking party executives in the area and destroying properties to register their displeasure at the appointment of Zuwera Mada Nashiru as the District Chief Executive.

The Ga West Municipal Assembly also saw market women in the Amasaman market protesting the retention of Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson as the Municipal Chief Executive. Amidst singing of war songs, the women complained that the retained MCE did not contribute any major development to the Municipal Assembly hence it was their expectation that he will be replaced.

Also expressing dissatisfaction with the retention of Clement Lamptey as Ga West MCE were popular social media commentators and communicators of the New Patriotic Party, Sir-Obama Pokuase and Opeimu Woyome who took to their Facebook pages to describe how challenging this act will be to the electoral fortunes of the in the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says it will be deploying more of its men to ensure that these uproars do not result in further destruction of properties or even claim lives.
