Calls for a broader conversation into the flagship free Senior High School program, President Akufo-Addo has indicated will not be a problem for him.

The caveat he gave, however, should centre around its accessibility, how it will be funded and its continuous sustenance.

This was in response to the constant calls by stakeholders in the education sector that there is the need for a discussion about how the policy has faired considering recent struggles by the government to keep the policy running.

The president, however, affirmed during a meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students that despite the issues it has been fraught with the policy will not be canceled.

“One of the things people are calling for is a review of free SHS. I think we should have a broader conversation about the incidence of education on our national development, and therefore also on our budgetary and public sector contributions to national education.”

In recent times, there have been some issues around the policy with the feeding and infrastructural challenges always recurring leading to some schools even threatening a shutdown as they could not feed the students due to food supply constraints.

Despite the issues surrounding the policy and the country’s decision to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund, president Akufo-Addo assured that the policy would not be canceled.
