Fears of a possible marine pollution has been raised following the recent washing ashore of some aquatic animals in Osu within the Greater Accra Region , Nzema in the Western Region  and Keta in the Volta Region .

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA ) has also dispatched a team to markets in the said areas to avoid the sale of such fishes to unsuspecting consumers and also sent samples of the dead animals to the laboratory for further investigation.

In a statement released by the FDA on April 5, 2021, the authority said it is collaborating with some other state agencies in investigating and addressing the issue.

And in an effort to prevent the infiltration of markets with the fishes washed ashore, it said it has dispatched inspection teams to some markets. That includes the Mandela market at Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly. It said dolphins reportedly washed ashore in the Western Region have also been taken for laboratory analysis.

They are thus cautioning the general public to careful in what fish they buy from the markets. The public is also advised to report all suspected cases of possession or selling of the “washed-ashore” fishes to the authority.

Sharing his thoughts on the incident on Accra-based TV3 and monitored by myactiveonline.com, Prof Dennis Aheto, an expert in coastal and marine studies suggested that the situation could be a case of ocean warming as most of the world’s oceans are being depleted of oxygen hence such mortality rate among the aquatic animals.
