A child’s right to life but a woman’s right to abortion in Britain

Gibraltarians protesting against laws that ban abortion

Gilbraltar is one of the few places in the world with a complete ban on abortion. Though in recent times no one has been subjected to the full penalty of the law, it remains however the only territory with a written constitution that punishes anyone found guilty with a sentence of a life of imprisonment.

Over the years residents have had to move outside of the territory to seek medical intervention because of this outlaw.

Not surprising the massive turnout of 62% ‘yes’ votes in support of the referendum to ease the British territory’s strict abortion law. But 36% of the voters were not in favour of the new lax to the law that allows abortion 12 weeks into pregnancy under special circumstances like rape, incest, a complicated or high-risk fetus.

The religious bodies may have kicked against this but the government was all in support both giving reasons from their modus operandi but then maybe this new law will bring a modus vivendi to the territory opposing views.
