Black Stars of Ghana may have won at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja but Africa and more particularly Zambia have paid a heavy price for the victory.

Fans of the Super Eagles invaded the stadium after the final whistle and forced the Black Stars players who were still on the pitch to run out for their dear lives. The Ghanaian players and officials sped off to the tunnel as the charged fans filled up every space on the stadium’s pitch.

However, one person who was not very fortunate is one official of the match, a Zambian medic, Dr Joseph Kabungo who was the doping officer for the match. The renowned doctor suddenly collapsed on the pitch and died.

Joseph Kabungo is famed in Zambia for his role in the Zambian team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.

According to Collins Atta Poku who was close to the incident, “They beat him, he fell and they throded on him. He lost consciousness was rushed to an ambulance closer to the Ghana dressing for CPR. The entire Ghanaian contingent watched on as resuscitation attempts were made with oxygen mask. He was taken to hospital later and now this. Sad.”

That was not the only negative side as Poku narrated via a tweet, “

I lost some money, Dr. Baah Nuako lost his two phones. A CAF match official needed oxygen yet had to be rushed to hospital. What i witnessed today really scared me. Alas I’m off to Qatar with Kakra9 and I am safely aboard my flight back to Ghana. Our brothers took this too far”.

A British-Nigeria journalist Osasu Obayiuwana stated that if the death of the CAF official was due to the stampede, then the Nigeria Football Federation would be in ‘terrible trouble” with Fifa.

His family, Zambia Football Federation and the government of Zambia has been duly informed according to Osasu.
