Accra Hearts of Oak overcame Legon Cities in Accra in match day 30 of the Ghana Premier League to return to the top of the league table.

The Rainbow club went into the match needing the win to get back to the top of the table after arch-rivals kumasi Asante Kotoko beat Karela a day earlier to leapfrog the Accra-based side to the summit of the table. And they got their way courtesy two first half strikes from Kwadwo Obeng and Frederick Botchway.

Kwadwo Obeng Jnr broke the deadlock in the 28th minute having seen his earlier effort in the opening minutes denied by Legon Cities goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey. Daniel Barnieh worked the ball from the right corner of the Legon Cities goal into the box before threading a pass into the feet of Obeng Jnr to tap in from close range.

In the 38th minute, Hearts of Oak doubled their lead with a goal from a marvellous screamer by Frederick Ansah Botchway. Salifu Ibrahim’s corner was cleared by Legon Cities and it went as far as Frederick Botchway who aimed a shot from outside the penalty box to leave Sackey powerless as the ball flew past him.

Legon Cities responded two minutes later with former Inter Allies set-piece specialist, Victorien Adebayor powering a free-kick past Richard Attah to register his first goal for the Royals.

Despite late pressure by the Royals to get an equalizer, the Phobians held on to see out the match and earned the maximum that sent them back to the top of the table, level on points with Asante Kotoko. Samuel Boadu’s side will face Mariano Barreto led Porcupine Warriors in the Super Clash on Sunday. Legon Cities meanwhile will play as guests to King Faisal a day later.
