Premier League stars dominate UEFA’s seasonal awards nominees list

UEFA has on Thursday afternoon released nominations for the various positions across the football fraternity. The positions include Men’s Player of the Year, Men’s Coach of the year, Women’s Coach of the Year and Women’s Player of the year.

Jennifer Hermoso, Lieke Martens and Alexia Putellas, all of Barcelona FC have been nominated for the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award. In the Men’s Coach of the Year category, Manchester City’s Premier League-winning coach, Pep Guardiola, Italy’s Euro 2020 champion, Roberto Mancini and Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel are the three nominated gaffers for the top prize.

Emma Hayes impressive role in guiding her Chelsea women team to the Champions League final last season has been rewarded with a place alongside her opposite number in the dugout during that final in Gothenburg, Sweden, Lluís Cortés of Barcelona Women and Swedish Women’s National team coach, Peter Gerhardsson for the Women’s Coach of the Year.

Whereas many football lovers are furious about the omission of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the list for the Men’s POTY, regulars Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are also absent in the top three with the former Barcelona captain the closet of the duo to the prize, having placed 4th in the list. The Men’s Player of the Year nominees are Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City, Italy and Chelsea’s European treble winner, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

Premier League is the domestic league with the most representations in the awards nominees list with two managers and three players competing for the top Men’s prizes on the night of Thursday, 26th August when the winners will be revealed during the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony in Istanbul.

Chelsea is also the club with the most representations in the awards nominees list with their goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in for the goalkeeper award as well as club captain Caesar Azplicueta and Antonio Rudiger competing for the top defender prize. The only positional award with neither a Chelsea or Premier League representation is the best Forwards place where Borrusia Dortmund’s sensation, Erling Haaland is in competition with Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandoski.
