Chelsea and Italian midfielder Jorginho has been voted the European Men’s Football Player of the year following a spectacular season with Chelsea and the Italy national team.

The play-maker shrugged off competitions from Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kanté and Premier League champion Kevin De Brunye to succeed Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandoski who scooped the prize last year.

Jorginho played an important role in Chelsea’s run to the Champions League final both under Frank Lampard in the group stages and his replacement Thomas Tuchel in the knock out phase. He played all 12 matches for Chelsea in the champions league on their way to lift the trophy at Porto. He also played 28 domestic league matches for the club in the season under review.

The Brazil-born Italian played all seven matches for the Italian national team as the Azzurri beat England at Wembley to become European champions. He was again in action for Chelsea when they beat Villarreal in the Super Cup, thus completing a European treble.

Chelsea football club also had other top recognitions on the night with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy adjudged the Best goalkeeper. Jorginho’s midfield partner N’Golo Kanté emerged as the Best Midfielder whereas Thomas Tuchel was adjudged the Best Men’s Coach.

Other winners on the night included Ruben Dias of Manchester City as the Best Men’s Defender, and Erling Haaland scooped the Forward of the Year prize to complete the men’s prize list.

Barcelona Women’s coach Lluis Cortes won the Women’s Coach of the Year award with his midfielder Alexia Putellas winning the Women’s Player of the Year. Alexia Putellas again was adjudged the Women’s Midfielder of the Season while her compatriot Jennifer Hermoso took home the Forward of the Season. Former PSG Women’s and now Barcelona defender Irene Paredes bagged the Defender of the Season prize and Barcelona goalkeeper Sandra Panos completed the Barcelona sweep through in the Women’s category with the Best Goalkeeper award.

Meanwhile, the President’s award has been given to the Denmark national team with UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin paying a glowing tribute to the award recipient for their interventions that saved the life of Christian Eriksen who collapsed during their Euro opening match against Finland on June 12.

“They showed us that human life is more important than anything and put things into perspective for all of us,” said Ceferin
