Georginio Wijnaldum’s dream of participating in the much anticipated Qatar 2022 World Cup might be shuttered after he broke his leg in training on Sunday.

As confirmed by AS Roma medics, Gini 31, had a fracture to the tibia in his right leg. He joined Roma for a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

As of now, it isn’t clear when Gini will be back but he will undergo further assessment by the club’s medical team.

Wijnaldum won the Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup while in playing in the English Premier League with Liverpool. But after transferring to the French Ligue 1 with PSG last season, he struggled to make an impact in Paris having seen his playing time limited in the French capital.

The Netherlands are in Group A together with Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar with their first match coming on November 21 against Senegal. That will then be followed by a November 25 showdown against Ecuador and the final group game on November 29 against hosts Qatar.
