Defending Ghana Premier League Champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko yesterday. August 21, announced the appointment of Burkinabe trainer, Seydou Zerbo, as the club’s new head coach ahead of the new season.

Seydou has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further 12 months with the Porcupine Warriors. Seydou is tasked with helping the Kumasi-based team qualify to the CAF Champions League group stages and he also has mandate to defend the league title won by departed coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.

59-year-old Seydou Zerbo began his coaching career in 2013 in his home country Burkina Faso where he managed Kotoko’s  Champions League opponents Rail Club du Kadiogo.

In 2014, he left Kadiogo to join Bankuy Sports also in Burkina Faso where he coached them for two years and later joined Sonabel and ASFA Yennenga.

In 2020, Seydou was appointed as head coach of the Burkina Faso home-based national team. He managed to take Burkina Faso to CHAN 2020 after eliminating Ghana Black Galaxies, then Black Stars B from the African championships qualifiers but was eliminated in group stages after winning just a game.

Due to his poor performance at the CHAN tournament, his contract was terminated by the Burkinabe Football Federation.

Seydou didn’t take it likely and took the Burkinabe FA to court and won the case. His sacking was described as “abusive dismissal”.

Seydou will be playing series of preseason games with the first team with his first likely assignment being against against Al Hilal on Tuesday August 23, 2022. His first official assignment, however, is against his former side Kadiogo in the Caf Champions League on September 9.
