Asante Kotoko chase FA Cup glory but must go through Chelsea first as they lock horns at Obuasi on Sunday

Kotoko players celebrate during a league match

Kumasi Asante Kotoko will take on Berekum Chelsea at Obuasi tomorrow, Sunday, July 25, 2021, in one of the two remaining quarter-final fixtures. But will that be Kotoko’s real path to glory this season or they will go trophyless?

No Kotoko fan will tell you that their team was in any inspiring form in the league that just ended. Following a series of good performances that saw them at the top of the table somewhere after the mid-season break, they crumbled and what looks like a race for the league turned into a shadow race to just end the league.

They played seven league matches between June and July and managed only three wins, with three defeats and a draw. Worryingly, they failed to win any of the league matches in July, with two defeats and a draw. And considering the fact that the teams they lost their last two matches against were relegation-threatened clubs who conceded many goals but still managed to beat Kotoko, it would be a source of worry for the Porcupine Warriors.

Berekum Chelsea has not been great themselves this season but they were able to secure a comfortable midtable position in the league. They lost four of their seven matches between June and July and had two wins out of three matches in July to climax the season.

Kotoko beat lower-tier side Asokwa Deportivo 2 – 1 in the last round to advance to the quarter-finals whereas Chelsea beat neighbours Kintampo FC 5 – 3 on penalties to progress following 1 – 1 draw. Kotoko would thus fancy their chances against the Blues in the encounter.

Kotoko would seek to defend the title they last won against current league champions Hearts of Oak and by doing so would equal the Phobians record as the most successful club in the competition with 10 titles.

The winner of the match on Sunday would face Ashanti Gold in the semi-final after the Obuasi side beat Kintampo Top Talents earlier on Saturday to book their place in the last four.
