Listen to #FixTheCountry protestors – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to lend a listening ear to the #fixthecountry protestors.

The National Democratic Congress’ 2020 flagbearer made this call during his speech at an event dubbed “THE STATE OF GHANA’S ECONOMY, THE SCORECARD” which was organized by the NDC Professionals Forum (PRO FORUM) in collaboration with the Center for Ethical Governance and Administration (CEGA) at the Cedi Conference Center of University of Ghana’s Economics Department.

Mr Mahama in his address submitted that “Ghana is caught in the throes of deep social and economic problems” such as “mounting unemployment….., ever-declining quality of education, problems with our healthcare and agriculture, decaying infrastructure, corruption, weakening and politicization of state institutions, insecurity, unreliable public services”.  These, he said continue to make life very difficult for the average Ghanaian.

He added that the speed with which hundreds of thousands of young people spontaneously took over social media to demand that the country be fixed is a caution about how unhappy they are about the way the country is being governed.

The Former President thus called on the government to listen to the concerns raised by persons involved in the #FixTheCountry protest rather than rubbishing them and ascribing political motives to them.

Still, in his address, the stateman cautioned that Ghana cannot be fixed with cheap and empty sloganeering, saying “the problems of our country and the solutions to them cannot be reduced to a handful of fancy slogans. And so, when elections are coming, it’s Free SHS, next elections, Agenda 111. Our problems go beyond this sloganeering.”

He explained that when people say #FixTheCountry, they are not talking about sloganeering neither are they talking about fixing a small part of the problems knowing there are problems in every aspect of the country.
