The unfortunate tidal waves that hit part of the Volta Region has sparked that conversation on sea defence projects with the legislator for the Ketu South Constituency Abla Dzifa Gomashie calling on President Akufo-Addo to make the completion of the sea defence project a priority.

Her constituency was also not spared of the havoc the tidal waves caused some communities in Ketu South with Salakope being the worst affected.

Anlo, Keta and the Ketu South Constituencies were also not spared the devastating impact of the tidal waves.

An unenthused lawmaker Madam Dzifa Gomashie after a tour to assess the extent of damage lashed out at the government for abandoning the sea defence project.

“Who is stopping them from building a shelter for my people? They are waiting for something untoward to happen and then people will be telling me to calm down. I won’t calm down now. The end of the sea defence as it was left and where we are today, even if they had started, what happened two days ago would not have happened, and I will not have been traumatized.”

These communities are hit with tidal waves every year and this situation can only be resolved with a sea defence wall.

The situation has triggered calls from various persons including traditional leaders for the government to expedite work on the “Blekusu Sea Defence Project”.

They indicated that any further delay in commencing the project will lead to severe destruction of properties, which in effect will render them homeless.

Meanwhile, the Works and Housing Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye has assured that the government will finance the construction of an eight-kilometre sea defence project in the area.

Paramount Chief of the Somey Traditional Area, Torgbiga Adamah III, has also called on the government to immediately commence the project to avert future destruction by the tidal waves.
