Protestors in Krobo

The Krobo district Electricity Company of Ghana Office in Somanya had to be closed down as aggrieved residents in the Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities were demonstrating over the billing issue again.

The ECG indicate that the action by some of the residents necessitated the closure of the office.

A statement by the ECG revealed that “various written, and verbal threats were issued against the Staff of Krobo district and indeed, against ECG as a whole.”

“Management cannot risk the lives of our hardworking staff in such an unsafe environment,” it added.

The ECG further said the reliability of power supply in that area “will be dependent on the availability of full Police escort for ECG’s engineers to attend to power supply challenges.”

The company assured that its services hinged on quality, safety and reliability and will continue uninterrupted in other parts of the ECG district “where security of staff and installations are guaranteed.”

As a contingency measure, the company has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the other security agencies to provide optimum security for its staff and its installations within the affected areas.

This situation was sparked by a group called the United Krobo Foundation who were angered by the installation of ECG’s prepaid meters in the area and were protesting the os such meters introduction in the district.

The recent development further aggravated an already existing dispute between ECG and the residents within that enclave.

ECG indicated that for them as a company they are committed to peacefully resolving the impasse and improving revenue collection in the Krobo area to aid them not to renege on their responsibilities in providing quality, safe and reliable services.

“ECG is, therefore, open to continued dialogue and engagement with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful environment conducive for normal operations.”
