The issue of fire safety is a concern for all Ghanaians considering the ravaging effect of fires where unfortunately life’s are lost and properties worth thousands of cedis are also lost.

Zooming in on the recent one that engulfed the central business district of Accra, Makola where shops were on fire and it took the fire service a lot of time to finally douse the fire due to the nature of it has brought many thoughts and talks about the topic back to the public space.

Most onlookers at the time of the fire outbreak were not happy with the time the fire service got there to douse the fire and they brought up some issues as well.

In finally revealing the committee’s report on what caused the fire the mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah indicated that what caused the fire was bad wiring systems, expired fire extinguishers were also part of the issues that caused the fires.

He further revealed that the committee will share its findings with institutions like the Electricity Company of Ghana  and the Ghana Water Company Limited as well

Also, he revealed that there will be rewiring across markets in Accra to help curb such preventable fires from occurring in the future.

President of the Ghana Union Traders Association, Dr Joseph Obeng commended the mayor’s efforts for swiftly coming out with the committee’s reports on what caused the fires. He also added that though the committee report has been taken and there are major lessons to learn from it there should also be a standard way of building major markets to curb such fires.
