Former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto as he is been declared as the country’s next President, in accordance with the electoral commission Verdict on 15th August 2022 following a Supreme Court ruling on September 5, in an election petition brought by Raila Odinga seeking to annul the results of the elections held in August.

He won the election in a narrow defeat of veteran opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was contesting his fifth election with 50.49% of the votes.

Mr Ruto will become Kenya’s fifth President since independence, winning the seat on his first attempt. Ruto’s party, the United Democratic Alliance also won a majority of seats in Kenya’s senate, the second highest in the National Assembly.

He was subsequently taken to the Supreme court of Kenya by his contender Railio Odinga.

In the petition, “Mr Odinga had argued that Dr Ruto did not meet the 50 per cent plus one threshold to be declared winner in the first round. Mr Odinga said that IEBC failed to deploy a fool proof elections technology, which they said saw the infiltration of the system”.

However on 5th September, the Supreme Court upheld Dr William Samoei Ruto as the new President of Kenya, making him the youngest president of the country.

President Mahama said “Congratulations Dr. William Samoei Ruto on your election as President of Kenya. As bearer of the trust of the Kenyan people, as affirmed in a clear, transparent manner by the Supreme Court, this is the time to unite the good people of Kenya for continued growth and prosperity”.

“I have every confidence that you will deliver on your mandate to the people. Wishing you a successful and impactful tenure as President of Kenya,” Mahama concluded.
