The Director-General of Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department, Commissioner of Police Isaac Ken Yeboah has described as a disgrace the act of detectives speaking Twi in court during trials.
He made this statement during a graduation ceremony at the Detective Training Academy in Accra on September 1, 2021.
The Commissioner of Police in view believes that speaking of English should be a source of pride to any police detective as that should be vital in the interrogation of subjects and report writing and therefore should resist the attempt to speak the Ghanaian language during trials in courts.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Ben Boakye charged the 95 detectives being graduated to make the service proud by speaking English in court during prosecution.
COP Boakye in his speech said, “when you go to court to testify, don’t go and say, My Lord, please I will speak Twi. It should be out of the question. It brings disgrace to the service.”
Also, the Police Commissioner encouraged the new detectives to remain resolute and incorruptible as there will be criminals who will try to influence them to compromise on their integrity. “Criminals will try to influence you to compromise your integrity and professional ethics but remain resolute and incorruptible,” he added.
At his turn, Superintendent Baba Iddrisu disclosed that the detectives had been given training in the area of criminal procedure, criminal investigations, human trafficking, human rights and child-friendly policing.
