With the never-ending drama in Parliament in these recent times, the legislator for the Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Norgbey has come out to justify his action as for allegedly snatching the  Speaker of Parliament’s seat.

He indicated that there was nothing wrong with touching the seat of the Speaker of Parliament.

During a scuffle on Wednesday between the Minority and Majority regarding a ruling on the approval of the 2022 budget, the legislator hauled the seat being occupied by the First Deputy Speaker and legislator for Bekwai Joseph Osei Owusu as sitting was suspended for an hour.

The Marshalls of Parliament had to come in to return the seat to its original position after the legislator’s action.

The legislator reiterated that he did not do anything wrong but was rather preserving the seat for Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

“I didn’t snatch the seat of the Speaker,” he clarified.

“Well, I was preserving the seat of Speaker [Alban Bagbin] to come.”

Mr Osei-Owusu had explained that he was counted as part of the legislators present on Tuesday for the approval of the 2022 budget statement and government’s economic policy due to the fact that he was also a legislator for the Bekwai constituency.

“When a [Deputy] Speaker rules that he is not the Speaker, then the Speaker would have to come and sit on his seat and take [a] decision on that,” Mr Norgbey said.

He shied away from saying whether he regrets his action but said so far as the Speaker was not on the seat before he pulled it, there was nothing wrong with it.

“So many touch the Speaker’s seat. I can touch it. After touching Speaker’s seat what happens?” he asked.

“The clerk, everybody touches the Speaker’s seat. It is just a normal thing,” he concluded.
