Ghana’s population increased by 6 million to stand at 30.8 million – GSS
Provisional figures collated from the 2021 Population and Housing Census puts Ghana’s population at 30.8 million persons.
The Ghana Statistical Service put out these provisional results during an event held at the GNAT Hall in the morning of Tuesday September 22.
Compared to the figures from the 2010 population and housing census which stood at 24.78 million, Ghana has recorded a 6.02 million increase in population.
Out of the 30.8 million people counted, 15.6 million which represents 50.7% are females whiles 15.2 million representing 48.3% are males. Another interesting fact to notice is the fact that Greater Accra region has caught up with the Ashanti region as the most populous regions with a total population of 5.4 million each. The Ahafo region came out as the least populated region with a total provisional population of 0.6 million people.
From the data released by the Ghana Statistical services, an average of 55,454 persons are added to the country’s population each year on the average.
Presenting the figures, government’s statistician, Professor Samuel Anim indicated that the three main causes of population increase were identified to be fertility, mortality and migration.
He however admonished that these factors cannot be considered in isolation. He explained that all the factors have an impact on each other and advised that users of the data in making population growth analysis should consider these factors together when doing so.
Speaking on the credibility of the data, Prof. Samuel Anim said that a data monitoring team was set to assess the quality of data collected. In addition to that, various technological methods were deployed to assess the credibility of the data.
While noting some challenges with cooperation, the government statistician thanked Ghanaians for their general cooperation.
Professor Samuel Anim disclosed that, even though the Ghana Statistical Service expects a variation in the figure for the total population, the variation will not be very significant.
Also speaking at the event, Minister for Information, Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was full of praise to the Ghana Statistical Service. He appreciated the fact that government will have some data to consider for policy formulation and execution.
The final figures for the 2021 Population and housing census will be released on November 8, 2021.
