Doubts in the Judiciary mean our democracy is under threat – Prof Agyeman-Duah supports Mahama
Chief Executive Officer of the John Agyekum Kuffuor Foundation, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah has joined the conversation about freedom of the Judiciary from the influence of the executives.
Prof Agyeman-Duah during an interview with TV3 said discussion of doubt about the independence of the judiciary raises concerns because as an arm of government that adjudicates and mediates cases if others are not pleased with the outcomes of some of the works so far “then our democracy must be facing challenges”.
The former United Nations staff posited that “not just the former president making the point” but it goes beyond the former president’s comments.
He said surveys conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana, the Corruption Perception Index points to some loopholes in the institution that needs to be addressed.
However, he did not agree with former president Mahama on singling out the current Chief Justice, whose dismissal the ex-president said would help to purge the institution could not be entirely accurate.
He pointed out that if even the Chief Justice is replaced and the necessary things are not done there would be no change in the perception.
Prof Agyemang-Duah supported Mahama’s statement that people have lost confidence in the Judiciary. “I agree if people lose confidence in the judiciary it is democracy that suffers”.
