Afenyo-Markin apologizes to Keta people for the wrong picture he showed
The Lawmaker for the Effutu Constituency and deputy Majority leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has rendered an unqualified apology for presenting a misleading image of sand winning activity in Keta in the Volta Region.
During a press briefing last week after tidal waves wreaked havoc to some communities in the Volta Region, the lawmaker presented a photo to the press insisting that the havoc was also partly man-made.
The photo which the lawmaker claimed was taken in Keta, one of the areas affected by the tidal waves in the Volta region showed some heavy-duty trucks loading sand from the seashore.
A member of the Minority side, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor who was enraged by the display of the wrong picture pointed out that the picture was fake.
That nearly resulted in a scuffle between Hon Dafeamekpor and Hon Stephen Amoah at Parliament’s foyer as they hurled insults at each other.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has apologized, alluding that the photo he showed to journalists was misleading.
“I sincerely apologize for relying on this [picture]…I render an unqualified apology. We reasonably relied on this picture in an article, the source has since pulled down and I apologize and it was not intended to mislead, if it was so, we wouldn’t have handed over all the documents,” he said during an interview.
According to some findings, the said image was originally taken in the Sierra Leonian capital, Free Town.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further revealed that the source he relied on for the picture has pulled the image down hence the apology to the people of Keta, and all Ghanaians who had the opportunity to see the picture.
About 4,000 residents have been displaced since the rising tides flooded homes close to the sea.
