Mr. Awuni Akyireba, a Certified Chattered Forensic Accountant and a member of staff of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for 11 years, has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to probe the Chief Executive Officer Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso over allegations of misappropriation of Covid-19 funds.

The petitioner is of the view that funds accrued during the extreme height of the pandemic have been misused by the management of the hospital.

“That the CEO at a performance review meeting and business meeting of the hospital has stated that all the directorates of the hospital incurred losses in the year under review which cumulative loss was about Ghc 6.2million wherefore the hospital was unable to pay end of the year 2020 bonuses to members of staff and meet the logistical needs of the hospital. And just on the 29th of October, 2021, the Acting Head of Directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate had to write to suspend all orthopaedics surgeries at the A&E theatre due to unavailability of theatre tables,” the petitioner said.

Mr Akyireba revealed that despite the CEO and Medical Director owning official vehicles upon their appointment, the hospital has gone ahead to procure two additional luxurious Toyota Camrys 2020 models for the comfort of the CEO Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso and Medical Director, Prof Baafuor Opoku.

He is thus worried that management could procure these two vehicles, to the neglect of the needed logistics for the hospital.

Also, he alleged that the Medical Director has given the other vehicle to his wife to use which unfortunately got involved in an accident on 23rd August 2021.

For him, these acts amount to an abuse of public office since his wife is not an employee of KATH but was given the official car to use.

He indicated that he has the full evidence to take the hospital management on.
