Fallen tree branch at Bubiashie

A tree branch fell on a 52-year-old mechanic sprayer in Bubuashie, Accra, instantly killing him and leaving his family in sorrow.

At the mechanic’s home, friends, family, and sympathisers came to console and comfort the grieving wife and kids.

A NADMO officer was also hurt in the tragic incident that transpired on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at 4:30 pm, and some neighbours were forced to leave their homes.

In certain areas of Bubuahsie, the fallen tree had also cut off residents’ access to electricity.

According to reports, the father of two sons scaled the tree in an effort to aid in the removal of the hanging tree that was impeding traffic and needed to be cut down.

Unfortunately, he fell off, and bounce high in the air before landing heavily on the asphalt road. When he was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Unable to believe what had happened, a neighbour accused the government of being responsible.

“This is very sad and as you can see the wife cannot even come out. This accident was so unexpected. The sisters are all here. It was a shock to all of us. Somebody I even spoke to just this morning.

“It could have been prevented. We have an assemblyman in this area. This tree has been here for over 20 years now. Are they telling us that they haven’t seen it? We need to be proactive as a country, we can’t always wait for the unfortunate to happen,” he said.

Meanwhile, NADMO Communications Director George Ayisi speaking on the incident encouraged the Department of Parks and Gardens to make sure that the neighbourhood’s trees are always being observed and pruned

He said “It’s unfortunate but normally when it comes to these trees Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) personnel do the cutting and the Department of Parks and Gardening are to continue to observe the trees and their branches.

“We have to cut the trees, and we, at NADMO, are conscientizing the people in the area. We don’t need to wait for things to happen so what we will do is prevent a recurrence of this. When you do continuous monitoring you’ll know which trees are weak for pruning,” he said on JoyNews on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.
