David Asante-Appeatu, the former Inspector General of Police, has dropped the defamation case he launched against Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong and television host Kwaku Annan.

Lawyer Sammy Darko submitted a notice of discontinuance on behalf of the plaintiff, David Asante-Apeatu, indicating that his client is no longer interested in the matter.

“Please take notice that the plaintiff herein hereby discontinues his claim against the defendant in the above mentioned with liberty”, the notice reads.

Although no reason was given for the decision, it is thought that a warning from the trial judge may have played a role in the decision.

It will be recalled that last week, Justice Ekow Baiden advised counsel for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu in open court that they should take their time with their application for judgment in default of defence since “they do not know the persons they are dealing with.”

Mr. Asante-Apeautu has filed a lawsuit against the two for comments they made against him on Net 2’s ‘The Seat’ talk show’

According to a writ of summons dated July 2, the plaintiff claimed a defamatory statement about him [David Asante-Apeatu] was made on June 16, 2021, which was broadcast in Twi and English.

According to Mr Asante-Apeatu  the words used by Mr Kweku Annan “meant and were understood to mean that;

(i) The plaintiff was and is a fence for notorious criminals both in Ghana and Nigeria.

(ii) The plaintiff harbours criminals.

(iii) The plaintiff is a criminal who has been working in cahoots with hardened international criminals to unleash terror on Ghanaians.

(iv) The plaintiff is/was on the payroll of top criminals in Ghana and as such slept on his duty as IGP and he refused/neglected to cause the arrest and prosecution of the criminals.”

The former IGP told the court that he was inundated with numerous calls from professional associates, journalists, social relations and friends and outright strangers and he has to answer very mortifying questions.
