Newcastle United have confirmed manager Steve Bruce has left his position by mutual consent.

Steve Bruce’s last game ended in a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. The new owners’ desire to replace him as soon as their takeover became public knowledge and his departure has now been confirmed.

Newcastle released a statement to confirm the situation. Their statement reads:

“Newcastle United can confirm that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach by mutual consent. Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”

Bruce managed to help retain Newcastle in the Premier League during a turbulent time with mainly subpar players. Bruce released a statement to express his gratitude to the club.

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.”I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond,” Bruce added.

Graeme Jones is said to take charge of the Magpies squad on an interim basis, supported by coaches Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Reports say that Newcastle has shortlisted and contacted three successors to Bruce:  Eddie Howe, Paulo Fonseca and Lucien Favre. All held initial talks with the club last week and Newcastle will hold final interviews before one candidate is selected.
