The Ghana Football Association has announced Serbian and former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac as the new coach of the senior national male football team.

Milovan makes the return to the country football as head coach a decade since he last led the Black Stars to a historic World Cup campaign in South Africa in 2010. He endeared himself to the flowers and fans of the national team when he led the team to the CHAN tournament finals in 2009 before leading them out to a memorable campaign in South Africa which was only halted by a Luis Suarez late drama in the quarter-finals.

His assistant at the tournament, Jame Kwesi Appiah led the team to Brazil four years later but it ended on a bad note for the team before they missed out in the 2018 edition in Russia after failing to qualify. Akonnor replaced Appiah with the mantle of making improvements but was relieved of his duties two matches into the qualifying series for Qatar 2022.

The Serbian will be assisted by two Ghanaians in Maxwell Konadu who was Appiah’s assistant before he was kicked out of the role later under Appiah and assigned to the home-based side. The other is Otto Addo who until his recent appointment, was an assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund.

Milovan’s immediate task will be to steady the team in the qualification series group phase where the Black Stars are second in Group G behind South Africa and on the same points are Ethiopia. His first assignment is the games against Zimbabwe next month before he will round up the group phase with matches against Ethiopia and South Africa.
