Manchester City players and supporters celebrate their final day Premier League title win after a 3-2 win over Aston Villa

Manchester City enforced a stunning comeback to secure the Premier League title for the second year in a row after going down by two goals to Aston Villa and tilting the race in favour of Liverpool.

Knowing that they cannot afford any result less than what Liverpool will get in the final match if they needed to be champions, Pep Guardiola made some changes to his side that failed to win the title with a game in hand when they dropped two points against West Ham. John Stones and Phil Foden were recalled into the lineup with Zinchenko and Jack Grealish dropping to the bench.

Despite City’s control of the ball, Steven Gerrard’s men found a way to turn the tide in Liverpool’s way when Matty Cash headed in Lucas Digne’s inviting cross to make it one-nil in 37 minutes. One turned two in the 69th-minute when a former Red, Philippe Coutinho turned it messy for City with Villa’s second goal of the afternoon to put Pep Guardiola’s men on the hook as Liverpool were level on points at the moment having been held by Wolves.

However, as has been the case of the Cityzens all season long, they roared Etihad back to life when Ilkay Gundogan halved the deficit with 24 minutes left after combining well with Rahim Sterling. Two minutes later, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Rodri teamed up to draw level for City as the race was thrown wide open again but this time with City now having the edge. Gundogan got his second and completed the comeback with a goal three minutes later after Kevin De Brunye pounced on an error by Tyrone Mings to thread the ball across the face of the goal for Ukrainian to score.

Liverpool also pulled past Wolves with Mohammed Salah and Andy Robertson scoring in the space of three minutes with barely four minutes of normal time remaining but it was a little too late and too less for the Reds as Manchester City are crowned champions for the second year in a row, crushing Liverpool’s quadruple’s dream.
