When the management of Kumasi Asante Kotoko fired Maxwell Konadu last week, they probably were hoping to breath freshness into the team and hopefully get the team back to its glory days. That may however be a decision that could linger on as a haunting nightmare in the minds of both management and supporters.

They responded to the axing of Coach Konadu by beating Dreams FC 1 – 0 over the weekend to move to 8th in the Ghana Premier League standing. That was a perfect honeymoon for stand-in coach John Smith who did not fail to give credit to his former boss in the win at the Theatre of Dreams in Dawu.

Al Hilal Omdurman was always going to be a tough one for Kotoko and John Smith would have had sleepless night thinking of solutions knowing very well the fans of the Oseikrom based side are not known for patience when it comes to the performance of their darling team.

After a pulsating end to end encounter at Kotoko’s adopted home, the Accra Sports Stadium, Kotoko are with a mountain to climb when they travel to Sudan to play the second leg after they were punished by a 77th minute Viny Bongonga first touch strike few moments after joining play as a substitute.

Late pressure from the Porcupine Warriors to salvage a point proved futile as the Sudanese side held on to claim victory and an away goal advantage. It is not all lost and as we have seen comebacks in many competitions in recent past. Kotoko could still advance to the next stage but would need special favour from the god of football to effect that shock in Omdurman. For now, it is Al Hilal’s time to merry into the Christmas and sorry to say but a ‘goodbye’ to the Kum Apem Apem Beba except the story changes on 5th January, 2021 in Omdurman.
