Ghana to face Morocco in AFCON opener
Ghana placed in Group C alongside Morocco for AFCON 2022
Ghana Black Stars will start their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Group C with a game against the Atlas Lions of Morocco. This was revealed following today’s draw for the 2022 tournament which was held in the host nation, Cameroon.
The Black Stars are housed in the same group with the one-time former champions, Morocco as well as Gabon and debutants, Comoros. The top two teams in the group will advance to the round of 16 along with four third-best placed teams.
Ghana was in Pot 2 for the draw and has avoided countries such as Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire in the group phase.
Host nation Cameroon will have Burkina Faso as their guest in the tournament curtain-raiser before they will take on Ethiopia and Cape Verde in a bid to secure automatic qualification from Group A. Meanwhile, defending champions, Algeria will play in Group E alongside Sierra-Leone, Equitorial Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire
The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations will start on 9th January 2022 with the group stage matches. That will be followed by the round of 16 from January 23-26 and the quarter-finals will be played on the 29th and 30th of January before the semi-finals take place on February 2 and 3. The final match of the tournament will be played on February 6, 2022.
