Kumasi Asante Kotoko put their recent misery in the Kumasi derby against King Faisal behind them to post a comfortable 3-1 win over another regional rival Ashanti Gold SC in Kumasi.

The Porcupine Warriors who occupied the top spot on the Ghana Premier League table need to churn out positive results to avoid slipping behind in case either King Faisal or Aduana Stars had a favourable outcome of their respective matches.

Cameroonian striker Frank Mbella opened the scoring for Kotoko in the second half after the two sides played out a goalless first 45 minutes. The Cameroonian netted the first of his three goals from the penalty spot after Osei Agyemang handled the ball in the box in an attempt to block Mfeuge’s goal-bound shot.

He added his second of the afternoon after his compatriot Mfeuge Georges Omgba forced Ampem Dacosta into a defensive blunder that presented the ball to Mbella to net his second in the 67th-minute. He completed his hat-trick with another goal five minutes later to put the game beyond the Miners reach.

Ashanti Gold introduced fresh legs and that immediately paid off with Elijah Addai pulling one back for his side with about five minutes of normal time to play. Prosper Ogum’s men held on to secure the victory that still keeps them on top of the table albeit goal difference as they sit level on points with Aduana Stars.

Kotoko will next face Berekum Chelsea away from home while Ashanti Gold will welcome Elmina Sharks to the Len Clay Stadium.
