Former Ghana Olympic bronze medallist Prince Amartey is dead
Former Ghana Olympic bronze medallist Prince Amartey died at age 78. Amartey won bronze medal in the middleweight (75kg) division for Ghana at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Germany.
Amartey previously competed in the lightweight division in the 1968 Summer Olympics. He has competed at the World Armed Forces games and also at the Common Wealth Games, where he lost his first bout in the 1970 edition to Patrick Doherty of Northern Ireland.
He was dismissed from the Ghana Army in 1974 for mental health problems. At the time of his dismissal, he was a Corporal.
After reports came out that he was wandering the streets as a pauper, a social club based in Ho, Club 50, supported him with toiletries and an undisclosed amount of money.
The Ghana Armed Forces commissioned a provision shop known as the Prince Amartey Mini Mart for him and handed it over to his family to help cater for his needs.
Prince Amartey was born on June 25, 1944.
