Aubameyang gifts Arsenal first win of the season
Arsenal has finally gotten out of their shambolic start to the season with a victory today at the Emirates Stadium to bring to an end a torturous few weeks of the new premier league season. And it took the Gabon international to halt the bad run of the Gunners, four weeks into the new season.
Arteta has been under intense pressure to turn things around at the club following a series of bad results that marked their start to the season. A two-goal defeat to newly-promoted Brentford on the opening Friday of the new season was the precursor to their bad form. Two more defeats followed, a 2-0 defeat to London rivals, Chelsea and the latest being an onslaught by Arteta’s former boss, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad.
Those defeats meant the Gunners went the entire opening month of the season without a goal in the league. They until today’s win, were the bottom side and the only team aside from their rivals in today’s match to have gone three matches in the season without a point.
Aubameyang who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of the suspended Granit Xhaka scored the only goal of the match six minutes past the hour mark. Nicolas Pepe shot at goal rebounded but the follow up ending up being the assist for Aubameyang to tap in to give Arsenal the vital lead which they held on to secure all three points.
The win marked the return of Thomas Partey and the debut of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Aaron Ramsdale. Will the win end the calls for Arteta’s head and will it be the start of great things for the Gunners this season? Let us know by commenting below.
