Youth wing of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to challenge the legality of the approval of salaries for First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the wife of the vice-president, Mrs Samira Bawumia.

The group said the approval of the salaries for the presidential spouses is wrong thus their intention to resist it by using all legal means available to them.

In a statement, the NDC youth said the committee put together to make that recommendation on emoluments of article 71 holders erred in suggesting that presidential spouses be paid salaries equivalent to that of cabinet ministers. They called President Nana Akufo-Addo the “chief architect of the decision to pay his wife, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo and wife of Vice President Mrs Samira Bawumia”.

They have threatened to invoke the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to declare the approval of the salaries unconstitutional.

Calling the decision to institutionalize the payment of salaries to the spouses of the President and the Vice President an “attack on the constitution of the country”, they said it is needless and a “pet project of President Akufo-Addo”.

The decision of the youth of the largest opposition party to embark on this exercise comes after they successfully held a massive demonstration on July 6 to seek justice for all persons who lost their lives as a result of brutalities by the various state security agencies in the country.
