Dr  Kwabena Duffuor, a Former Finance Minister has revealed that the Ghana Cedi depreciation has  exposed the Akufo-Addo led government’s economy, citing Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s own standard of measurement: ‘If the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you.’

The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, in an interview with GHOne TV, stated that the Ghanaian economy is faced with clear issues.

“Look at the cedi, for example: when I was in office [2012], you needed 1 cedi 88 pesewas to get a dollar but now you need 6 cedis 20 pesewas to get a dollar”.

“[A few] years ago, Dr Bawumia said: ‘When the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you’; the exchange has exposed the government now, meaning the fundamentals are weak by Bawumia’s own explanation,” he noted.

Dr. Duffuor explained that the Ghanaian cedi is taking the speed of “Usain Bolt” and as such dares Dr. Bawumia to live up to his own words by arresting the ever depreciating cedi.

He quipped “Where is he? Dr Bawumia, the cedi is running; arrest it”

The former BoG boss who currently eyes the presidential seat of the  National Democratic Congress (NDC) marvels why Bawumia who had bragged about working at the central bank and that there was so much money that Ghana does not need to borrow will superintend over this mess as currently witnessed in the country.

“He [Bawumia] also made a point that he had worked at the central bank and that there was so much money and we didn’t have to go and borrow; what has happened during his term?” he quizzed.

Speaking on his Presidential ambition, Dr. Duffour stated that he was urged by the late former president JJ Rawlings to contest Mahama in 2018 but he shot the idea down.

“I felt the time was not right when Rawlings called on me to contest”.

He explained that the late Rawlings wanted to lead his campaign but he felt the time was wrong for him to go into the contest.

“The only reason I’m doing so now is because I think the party can still do better and it must involve everyone”, he added.
