On the recent backdrop of disagreement between the National Democratic Congress and Electoral Commission over the use of the Ghana card as the sole source document in the limited voter registration exercise, Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana Professor Ransford Gyampo has admonished the Electoral Commission to extend an olive branch to the NDC on how to address the situation.

The opposition party has not ceased to hide their disapproval of such a move by the EC as it complains it could cause most people to lose their rights to vote.

Due to this, the lecturer advises the EC to “make room for the suggestions from the NDC”.

Per the current CI, the EC does registration with an existing voter ID, passport, and National ID as the source documents. If you do not have any of these, you need to get two registered voters as guarantors to be able to register.

However, the EC wants to make the Ghana card the sole document for its planned limited registration with the C.I. titled: “Public Regulations 2021” expected to regulate the upcoming continuous voter registration exercise.

This new Constitutional Instrument has since been tabled before the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament.

The opposition NDC on the other hand has expressed its misgivings about the EC’s move citing it could disenfranchise many.
