Members of the Juaben Municipal Assembly have been detained since the morning of Friday, October 29, 2021, for refusing to confirm the President’s candidate, Mr Alex Sarfo Kantanka for the position of Municipal Chief Executive.

Chairman Aluta as he is known, was rejected in the first confirmation vote, polling six out of the 26 votes cast two weeks ago. He is not even qualified to be renominated for the second exercise, according to the local government statute, because he did not meet the 50% threshold required for renomination.

However, a source close to the case according to  ModernGhana News indicated that the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, who is closely involved in the matter, has vowed to teach the Assembly Members a terrible lesson by holding them hostage until Mr Sarfo Kantanka is confirmed.

Three military armoured vehicles and a Police van allegedly pulled from the anti-armed robbery team have encircled the Juaben Municipal Assembly, where the vote is scheduled to take place.

The locked up Assembly Members have also promised not to vote, even if it means their lives, according to a source who spoke to the news team from the hall.

Mr Sarfo Kantanka apparently conveyed word to the Ashanti Regional Minister that he was still appealing to Assembly Members who were planning to reject him again, therefore the voting that was meant to take place last Friday had to be postponed indefinitely.

To persuade Assembly members, a delegation of traditional leaders and Ama Pomaa Boateng, the area’s Member of Parliament, was dispatched.
