Kwame Agbodza, a member of Parliament for Adaklu, has stated that he will continue to defend the June 4th Revolution spearheaded by the Late former President Jerry John Rawlings on any given day.

The lawmaker in Ghana’s eighth parliament noted that the vision of the disbanded Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) that carried an operation and saw to the execution of a privileged few who were noted to be mismanaging the country at the time was superior to that of the present Akufo-Addo administration.

History has it that from June 4, 1979, to September 24, 1979, Ghana was governed by the AFRC.

The AFRC ascended to power following the overthrow of the Supreme Military Council, another military administration.
The overthrow was to put an end to excessive corruption and hardships that were bedevilling the country.

However, after a successful coup, Rawlings led Ghana for a brief period in 1979, before then taking back power and leading from 1981 to 2001.

Subsequently, June 4th was institutionalized and expected to be marked each year.

It is against this backdrop that on Saturday, June 4, 2022, the descendant of the AFRC, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which was founded by the late Former President Rawlings, celebrated this year’s anniversary. Nonetheless, there are those who believe that the June 4th revolution has outlived its purpose because Ghana is currently a democratic state.

However, on Monday, June 6, 2022 during a debate on TV3’s New Day about the celebration, Mr Agbodza stated that the current electoral situation in Ghana is worse than it was under the military regime.

“The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council vision was far better than Akufo-Addo Addo’s vision,” he stated, defending the June 4 insurrection.

However, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Member of Parliament for Sekondi, who was also on the same show where the Adaklu Member of Parliament was speaking remarked that, despite some of the issues associated with Ghana’s electoral system, elections are improving in the country.

He explained that the country would occasionally see some overzealous individuals reacting in an unacceptable manner to electoral issues.

Mr Mercer further stated that the country has seen growth in all of its divisions.

“As a country, we are improving with our election,” he remarked.
