Every Ghanaian now owes at least GHS11,400 but they say times are not hard – Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama has claimed that Ghana is riddled with high levels of debt and economic hardship.
The former President made this claim on Genesis FM in the Ahafo Region as a part of his “Thank You” tour of the country which has now led him to the Western belt.
Mr Mahama recounted how the NPP accused him of running Ghana into high debts in the run-up to the 2016 election and promised to do better. He spoke about how specifically Mr Ken Ofori-Atta accused him and his government of making each Ghanaian indebted to the tune of GHC 1,700 because the government he led had borrowed a lot of money. He compared this to the fact that each Ghanaian now owes GHC 11,400 which he claims to be a result of mismanagement of the economy even though they promised to do better without borrowing.
The former flagbearer NDC further argued that Covid-19 has been used as a smoke-screen to cover economic hardship and mismanagement of the economy, indicating that Ghana’s economy was weak before the advent of Covid-19 and just like Covid-19 does not kill you by itself but worsens other underlying health conditions which then kills you, the pandemic only came to add up to the existing problem.
“If you go to the market and you get to know the prices of goods and services, you will know times are really hard. But if I mention it, they will say times are not hard. It is Mahama who is fueling the perception of hardship,” he added, describing how bad the economic situation is in the country.
