YEA to pay SHS graduate ‘nurses’ GHS400 a month
A revelation has been made by the Youth Employment Agency that plans are far advanced for the employment of about 5000 SHS graduates to aid nurses working at the Community Health Planning Service(CHPS) compounds.
During an interview on Citi TV, Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Afriyie Head of Corporate Affairs of the agency revealed the intention of the agency to continue to run the program, indicating the agency’s readiness to pay the recruits.
“Since the time we had lawyer Justin Koduah as CEO till the time of my current boss, there has never been any instance where our beneficiaries have come out to complain about unpaid allowances. We manage our programmes very well.”
“We are fully prepared to sustain the programme.”
According to him, each of the graduates will be paid GHS400 per month as remuneration.
The decision by the Youth Employment Agency to engage 5000 SHS graduates to assist at the CHPS compounds has met the firm resistance of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association with the association fronting for the employment of the over 20,000 trained nurses sitting at home to offer professional services instead of employing SHS graduates to work after a few weeks of training.
Although the Director General of the Ghana Health Service Dr Patrick Kumah Aboagye allayed the fears of the professional nurses stating that the SHS graduates’ engagement is not for clinical work but for community work.
The GRNMA still insists that the professionals ought to be engaged in this regard and is set to decide on the next line of action at its council meeting if nothing is done by September.
