After some hours into the sit down strike by commercial bus drivers to press home their demands, the Ghana Private Transport Union (GPRTU) has suspended the strike action which heavily impacted passengers today Monday December 2021.

Reasons for the change in direction was because there have been tangible action from the corridors of the government. According to a release, the leaders of the union have been invited to the negotiation table by the Presidency hence their decision to suspend the strike.

“The intended strike, which was scheduled to take effect today Monday 6th December 2021, has been suspended. The leadership of the union has been invited to the Presidency during the course of the day. We, therefore, entreat our cherished members to go back to their normal duties,” portions of the statement issued on Monday said.

As the industrial action was carried out by commercial drivers this morning, it left thousands of commuters in parts of the country stranded and also created chaotic scenes at some bus terminals where the Police were called to ensure calm as some drivers harassed their colleagues who had passengers in their vehicles.

The aggrieved drivers were demonstrating the high cost of fuel which has been skyrocketing for the past six months.

Also, seven taxes on fuel which amount to GH¢1.9 on each litre of fuel purchased has been the bone of contention between the transport operators and the government in the last few weeks.
