We’ve learnt our lessons, will be cautious – Oyerepa FM management
Management of Oyerepa FM has assured of major lessons drawn from its broadcasting practice following a resolution of the impasse between the station and the Kumasi Traditional Council.
The traditional authorities were left angered following comments made by Mr Akwasi Addai Odike of the United Progressive Party regarding the role of chiefs in championing illegal mining in the Ashanti region.
Realizing the magnitude of the issue, Oyerepa FM management involved stakeholders such as the National Peace Council, Ghana Journalists Association and even members of the clergy who had to intervene and appeal to the authorities on its behalf to get the decision to shut down the station reversed.
After the resolution of the impasse, Manager of the Oyerepa FM, Somme Tymer Otuo Acheampong promised the station would be cautious in its engagements with panellists on its shows.
“There wasn’t any limitation as far as I am aware. The issues are very simple. We operate as a media house, and we know we don’t malign and indict people so first of all, we have apologized with a clear understanding of the traditions of the council. But we are going to be a bit more circumspect and careful with the things we say generally. However, we won’t be less critical because we will be going about our duties, but ensure that our resource persons don’t say things about people that cannot be substantiated.”
Subsequently, the station has now been pardoned and has subsequently commenced operations in earnest.
Meanwhile, Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, acting President of the Kumasi Traditional Council after the intervention of the stakeholders accepted the apology and asked the management of Oyerepa FM to resume operations.
