We will register all eligible voters in 2023 – Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission has said all eligible Ghanaians with the Ghana Card will be registered before the Local Assembly elections in 2023.
Director of Elections at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe made this assurance during a discussion on Citi TV on 27th September 2022 that the EC will not leave anyone of voting age who wants to acquire a Voters ID behind.
Dr Quaicoe said, “By the discussions that we have, we are convinced that anybody that is qualified to register and is willing to register will be covered,”.
Currently, the EC is seeking to make the Ghana card the only source document for acquiring a Voters ID to vote, but the opposition National Democratic Congress has disapproved, arguing that it would disenfranchise many who are yet to get the Ghana Card which is a cumbersome process.
Public Regulations 2021 is the title of the CI which will regulate the upcoming continuous voter registration exercise.
Currently, a passport, a national ID, an existing voter ID or two guarantors are what is needed to be able to register and vote.
But according to Dr Quaicoe, all such doubts will be cleared, and challenges addressed to make the process a smooth and transparent one.
“We believe that the challenges are bound to happen, and the challenges are bound to be addressed… There is no way we can stay without addressing the challenges.”
He revealed that deliberations on the review of the law have been in place for about two years now.
“It has gone through a lot of discussions, a lot of interactions, a lot of stakeholder engagements before we came to this conclusion.”
