The Ghana Medical and Dental Council has maintained its stance not to accept certificates from Ukraine-trained medical doctors.

Answering questions on what informed the council’s decision during an interview on TV3 on Monday, 26th September 2022, Registrar of the Council, Dr Devine Banyubala said “We are to secure the highest standard of the profession if you understand the unique and sensitive nature of the medical practice doing online training is not acceptable for such a profession, and we owe it a duty to safeguard the public as well in our practice“.

Dr Banuybala said that the Council extended an invitation to some of the students who hitherto were studying medicine in Ukraine before the war and were flown back for safety an opportunity to write exams and continue their studies in Ghana. Some wrote the exams, others did not turn up for reasons best known to them and now that window of opportunity according to Dr Banyubala is gone.

According to him, “doing online medical studies is not consistent with approved practice so we won’t accept their certificates”.

He added that “our profession is an honourable and learned  one and we will not engage in any exchanges or compromise on that .’’
