UTAG and NLC tussle; NUGS appeal to President Akufo-Addo to intervene
UTAG, NLC taking steps to end strike as students remain frustrated and want president’s intervention
The tussle between the University Teachers Association of Ghana and the National Labour Commission rages on with the situation resulting in a legal tussle between both parties.
This has steered various conversations in the country with the most affected party which are the students who are frustrated sharing their opinions on the said issue.
Emmanuel Yiadom of the National Union of Ghana Students has added the Union’s voice to the conversation by appealing to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene in the situation otherwise they would resort to other means to get their lecturers back into the classroom for them to feverishly prepare for their semester examinations.
The strike action by UTAG to demand better conditions of service has entered its third week. The government has been trying to get them back to the classroom by engaging them on the negotiation table to bring finality to the matter. But a meeting held for that purpose was said to have unfortunately ended inconclusively.
But UTAG and the government are trying to get back to the negotiation table again with UTAG making some demands which are
- The Ministry of employment and labour relations and the NLC should work at discontinuing the legal action against UTAG
- That UTAG while the NLC begin withdrawing the legal suits will also take steps to suspend the on going strike action.
- That government acknowledges the need to improve the working conditions of University Teachers and shall treat this will all the seriousness it deserves
With these demands in place, there is the hope that both parties fulfil their part of the bargain for academic work to resume smoothly on the various university campuses.
