Teacher unions raise concerns over government’s ‘one teacher one laptop’ initiative
The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has been petitioned by some teacher unions; Innovative Teachers and All Teachers Alliance to probe the procurement of the new laptops for teachers by the government.
Their petition is premised on the fact that the procurement of two hundred and eighty thousand laptops ought to result in a significant reduction in the price for teachers and the taxpayer to pay.
They however are suspecting that the price of the laptop which is GHS1,550 has been inflated. They argue that per the number ordered and the specifications of the laptop, it is common knowledge that the price would be significantly lower than the purported price stated above. Per their estimation, it should not cost a teacher more than GHS600 to obtain a laptop under the initiative and anything beyond that is unacceptable.

The concerns raised by the two teacher unions are coming on the back of the newly launched “one teacher one laptop” by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. The programme was launched on September 3 and the Vice President during the launch explained that the initiative is aimed at bridging the ICT gap between teachers in urban areas and their colleagues in rural areas.
