Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin

The Assin North Parliamentary seat stays pending as parliament has turned down a request by the registrar of the General Jurisdiction of the law court complex to declare the seat vacant.

According to the letter sighted by myactiveonline.com, Clerk of Parliament, Mr Cyril Nsiah indicated that the seat cannot be declared vacant by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

It would be recalled that a High Court in Cape Coast had annulled the December 7 Parliamentary results for Assin North Constituency following an accusation that the MP, James Quayson had Canadian citizenship at the time of filing to contest the election.

However, Mr Nsiah has indicated that before receiving the letter from the Registrar of the Law Court Complex, the Speaker had already received certified true copies of documents from the lawyers of James Quayson, showing they had filed an appeal against the judgment of the High Court.

According to the clerk, the evidence points out that the issue is still pending in court and thus the Speaker cannot make any declaration on it now.
