Ghanaians have been greeted with the sad news of several natives and others of Bogoso losing their lives on Thursday afternoon following a deadly gas explosion at Appiatse between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region.

Early reports from police investigations reveal that a mining explosive vehicle on its way Tarkwa to Chirano collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion.

Several of the victims who survived have been sent to nearby health facilities to receive treatment.

A statement from the police soon after the incident read “A huge explosion occurred this afternoon, Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Appiatse between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region”.

Later, the police provided an update to the situation by releasing a second statement via its Facebook page. It said, “Reference to our earlier emergency public notice, the Police have taken charge of the situation providing security to enable the emergency workers including the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO and the Ambulance Service to manage the situation.”

The police advised the public to move out of the community to nearby towns for safety while also urging other towns to open their doors to those who will come seeking shelter by opening their schools’ classrooms and churches to accommodate them.

“The public has been advised to move out of the area to nearby towns for their safety while recovery efforts are underway.

“An appeal is also being made to nearby towns to open up their classrooms, churches etc to accommodate surviving victims,” the statement added.
