No stone is being left unturned on enforcing the ban of tricycles on major highways as the Greater Accra Regional Minister has revealed that to make sure the rule is being enforced to the letter, today Tuesday, November 2, 2021 security officers will be dispatched to patrol the Tema Motorway.

This is to make sure these tricycles do not ply the highway routes as restrictions have been placed on them. Officers have been equipped to hit the ground running the minister revealed. According to the minister, the various task force in the assemblies will collaborate with the security officers.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister followed through with his aim to ban tricycles popularly known as “aboboyaa” from plying the major highways in the national capital.

“We have put all the mechanisms in place and the logistics. The Ghana Police Regional Command has been given a brand-new Nissan pick-up so [today], we will put all the operational plans in place, and then they will start work on the Motorway 24/7. It is a law, and when people offend, it is the law enforcement agencies that need to deal with that. All the operations of the assembly will be assisted by the security agencies”.

However, members of the Borla Taxi and Tricycle Association are calling on authorities to provide them with a mobile transfer site to help its members obey the rules regarding this directive.

“Our cry about the impact of this ban is that we hope that something can be done about it. We plead that there should be a mobile transfer centre and more transfer stations as with the compartment trucks in the system. In Greater Accra, we have 29 assemblies, if they all have transfer centres, [it will help].  The transfer station that we have is also not enough. We play a major part in waste management because our number is huge. If this is done, we can help the Minister to get the tricycles off the Motorway”, Chairperson of the Association, Lydia Bamfo, said

The region’s strategy is to have such waste transfer sites in every district and region by 2022.

When these are put in place, tricycles will be barred from using all major roads, they will now be expected to deposit refuse at the waste transfer sites.
