Police intercept Bawku-bound bus loaded with guns, 6 arrested

Six persons have been nabbed by the Ghana Police Service for involving in the illegal trade of AK 47 weapons.

They were apprehended on Friday, December 3 2021 the Police service revealed in a press statement issued today 6th December 2021 and appropriately signed by Director –General of Public Affairs ACP Kwesi Ofori.

“The police have arrested six suspects on Friday, December 3, 2021, for their involvement in an illegal AK 47 transaction.

“The first suspect, Alhassan Jamah, was arrested at new Osino by the National Operations Directorate Highway Patrol during a stop and search operation. An AK 47 rifle with twelve rounds of ammunition was found hidden in his travelling bag on board an Accra-Bawku Yutoun bus.”

According to the Police, intelligence-led operations led to them apprehending the other five.

“An intelligence-led operation later led to the arrest of five more suspects namely; Basihiru Salifu, Kassim Anninga, Mohammed Asako, Salifu James and Ibrahim Mohhamed for their involvement in illegal arms transactions.”

The Police indicated that “all suspects are in Police custody assisting with investigations”.

Also, five illegal gun manufacturers have been recently nabbed by the Bono Regional Police Command at Kintampo.

The Police noted that the arrest of these criminals was through intelligence which is aimed at breaking the crime rate in the region.

The Police further indicated that several implements used for manufacturing weapons have been retrieved from two “criminal enterprises.”

Their act of manufacturing guns without appropriate licenses in Ghana is against the Arms and Ammunitions Act of 1972.
